NOvember
:: workshop SERIES ::
Abs & spine

ONLINE
The spine is the center of the body, controlled and moved by muscles on the front and back. When we understand how to hold and move the spine, many things get easier, including standing, sitting, breathing, and yoga postures. In this workshop series, we will explore the actions and functions of the spine and abdomen, including backward bending, forward bending, side bending and twisting.

Saturdays in November
10am - 12pm CST

***Eligible for 8 hours of CE for OHYA and YA.***

SESSION 1 :: Saturday, Nov 7
Bending the spine backward
Use the three parts of the spine to bend backward. Explore the anatomical elements of the spine, muscles and organs that are affected by backbending. Learn the therapeutic, functional and energetic effects of backbending.

SESSION 2 :: Saturday, Nov 14
Bending the spine forward
Forward bending happens due to abdominal contraction. Explore the mechanics of forward bending as well as the impact on the nervous system and internal organs.

SESSION 3 :: Saturday, Nov 21
Twisting & Side Bending
Twisting and side bending are more complex and less powerful than forward and backward bending. Explore how the body twists and bends sideways, including muscular function and effect.

SESSION 4 :: Saturday, Nov 28
Putting it all together
Learn how to combine the different actions and effects of moving the spine to create alertness, relaxation, strength and balance.

Advancing Your Practice*

ONLINE
Join us for a series to improve your strength, flexibility, balance and concentration. Each week we will adopt a different focus. This month is practice-based however there will be time for Q&A.

*This series focuses on the physical body. Join us in February for The Yogic Mind to advance your practice in other directions.

Saturdays in December
10am-11:30am CST
SESSION 1 :: Saturday, Dec 5
Back and forward bends
This class works toward full backbends and leg behind the head variations (full forward bends). We will warm the body, then build the preparatory postures. From there, we explore "full" postures.

SESSION 2 :: Saturday, Dec 12
Arm balances and inversions
This class builds the strength and integration to hold the body on the arms. Also it builds the balance and focus to invert the body in Headstand and Tiger. We will do many preparations, and teach you how to build these exercises over time.

SESSION 3 :: Saturday, Dec 19
Hips and Lotus
This week we will focus on rotating the hips. This action is necessary to do the most advanced practices of yoga, which require sitting for long periods of time. We will practice increasingly difficult postures, from Tree all the way to Lotus.

SESSION 4 :: Saturday, Dec 26
Abdominal control
The practices of Uddiyana and Nauli are called the crown jewels of Hathayoga. These require a lot of control of the breath and abdomen. This week we will focus here, building both the elements of breath control and the connection to complex abdominal muscles.

Strength & Stretching

ONLINE
Celebrate the New Year with increased focus on functional strength and mobility in the body! Strength and flexibility are directly linked. If we pay attention, they will develop together. This month we will focus on how the body builds both strength and 'openness'.

Saturdays in January
10am-12pm CST

***Eligible for 8 hours of CE for OHYA and YA.***

SESSION 1 :: Saturday, Jan 2
The Inseparable Pair: Strength & Flexibility
We will begin with how muscles work. How do they contract and release, and what is the relationship between the two? What is flexibility, and how flexible should we be?

SESSION 2 :: Saturday, Jan 9
Gravity
The single most common reason that our muscles engage is to counteract gravity. This has a profound impact anytime we "stretch" while falling into gravity's pull. This includes many yoga postures. If we are not careful and aware, this causes tightening instead of relaxation.

SESSION 3 :: Saturday, Jan 16
Breaking Down Tightness
Many of us practice yoga to become more flexible. This week we focus exclusively on tight areas of the body and how to release them.

SESSION 4 :: Saturday, Jan 23
Finding Balance
Can we make strength and flexibility work together? Can we develop both at the same time? This final session focuses on constructing a regimen that utilizes both strength and flexibility to balance the joints. This reduces tension while increasing functionality!

The Yogic Mind

ONLINE
What is meditation? How and why do we do it? Where does it come from? This session focuses on the mind. We will explore why we think what we think, and how the practice of meditation is designed to change how the mind works. Throughout the month, learn different methods of meditation and their function, as well as what modern neuroscience has learned about the efficacy of meditating.

Saturdays in February
10am-12pm CST

***Eligible for 8 hours of CE for OHYA and YA.***

SESSION 1 :: Saturday, Feb 6
Thinking About Thoughts
Why do we think what we think? What type of thoughts get repeated? This week we will explore what type of thoughts we have and why. How do these affect our sense of who we are and what we believe about reality?

SESSION 2 :: Saturday, Feb 13
Stopping Thought
One of the oldest forms of meditation is 'concentration', the active attempt to reduce and stop thought. How do we do it? Is it even possible? This week we will explore the techniques to stop thought.

SESSION 3 :: Saturday, Feb 20
Abstraction
A more recent form of meditation is to abstract the mind. Rather than concentrating it on a single thought or object, we cultivate a concept. This causes us to reinforce certain tendencies, like compassion or love. Surprisingly, this method has been studied by neuroscientists, who notice dramatic changes in our brains.

SESSION 4 :: Saturday, Feb 27
The Thinker
In order to think, there has to be a thinker. Who is this? Different philosophies answer this question in different ways. Here we will explore several answers. The meditation practice for this week will help us become aware of who thinks. It is one of the most powerful but most difficult methods of meditation, as it challenges our conception of who we are.
