Calcutta Yoga
Buddha Bose and the Yoga Family of Bishnu Ghosh and Yogananda
by Jerome Armstrong

Picture
Buddha Bose was born to British stage magicians, and married into the family of Bishnu Ghosh and Yogananda.

The magic of yoga was in his blood.

The story begins at a time when Indian nationalism was at is peak, when "physical culture" took its shape, and neighborhood saints teaching samadhi and pranayama, lived in the urban setting of Calcutta, India. The book follows this Calcutta yoga family through four generations to the present as modern yoga reaches the world.

"This over 600 page tome is the culmination of many years of deep research and archival work in the field by Armstrong, tracing the untold story  and history of Buddha Bose and the yoga family of Paramahansa Yogananda and his brother Bishnu Ghosh. This is a must read if you are curious about where “hot yoga” comes from, and the history of modern yoga and physical culture in India."  --Yogic Studies

""Jerome Armstrong, author of Calcutta Yoga," tells the "largely untold story of Buddha Bose & the Yoga Family of Bishnu Ghosh and Yogananda, and how that led to Bikram Yoga. Jerome also speaks to his own experience of practicing both standard hot yoga and the more traditional teachings of Ghosh Yoga, and the crazy turn of events that led to the discovery of a rare document and a relationship to the family." -- J. Brown Yoga Podcast

"Nobody stays in Calcutta for a long time without getting involved, in one way or the other. I can feel how deeply you are now linked and it moves me. The way you write about it all, interweaving historical facts with your own experiences. The result is a book which is neither an autobiography nor a purely scientific work - quite a unique mixture." --Claudia Guggenbuhl, Yoga in Calcutta.
"I wish I was doing what he is doing." --Bishwanath Ghosh, Longing, Belonging: An Outsider at Home in Calcutta; Chai Chai; and Gazing at Neighbors.
